Art Therapy: A Path to Healing Through Creativity

Art therapy allows us to access our subconscious and inner world that is often hard to access with words alone. This is especially true for children and those with trauma. Children often struggle to find the words to talk about what they developmentally do not understand enough to verbalize. Adults with trauma may also not have the words to express trauma that has been stored in the body somatically, but this is beautifully unlocked with art giving access to treat and restore trauma.

Art therapy uses creative methods like drawing, painting, and sculpture to facilitate growth and improve mental health. The idea is simple: expressing yourself through art can help improve your well-being. Though humans have used art for communication and healing for thousands of years, art therapy became a formal approach in the 1940s when doctors noticed that those with mental illness often used art to express themselves.

Reasons to Seek Treatment

Art therapy activities are effective for a wide range of issues, often used alongside other therapies like group therapy or CBT. It’s helpful for:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Stress
  • Substance use
  • Emotional or relationship difficulties
  • Aging-related issues
  • Medical conditions

Benefits of Art Therapy

Research shows that even an hour of creative activity can lower stress and improve mood. Art therapy can be a powerful tool for anyone who has experienced trauma, physical violence, anxiety, or other psychological challenges. No artistic talent is required. The focus is on expressing your inner world, not creating a masterpiece. Even simply being around art can boost mental health.

Unlike an art class, which teaches technique, art therapy is about exploring emotions and self-expression. The goal is to help bring clarity and focus on your inner world and feelings and achieve wellness, not on creating a perfect product.
